Children and the Internet

Your children and technology are sometimes an uneasy subject to discuss, because many times, we don't know what they are capable of doing, or we can be intimidated by their knowledge. We often joke about having a young child setting our clocks or setting up our DVD players. To us, children seem to be born with an understanding of technology that alludes us.

We purchase devices for them, such as computers for school work and cell phones to make sure they stay in touch with us, but we can't keep them entirely safe, because they can go places we never imagined. They can also do things, that while they start in the virtual world, can end up in a lifetime of regret in the real world.

Like all things, children need guidance, and parents need knowledge. Both of these publications discuss some common sense points on how to keep you and your family safe. You would not hand your children the keys to the car or the house keys without proper training and constant reminders of responsibility. You should not hand them a cell phone or a computer with little or no guidelines. The technology may be beyond your understanding, but children's behavior is not.
